Sydney is a city on the water and ferries offer more than just convenient transport for visitors and locals alike. Taking the ferry to Manly on a sunny day is a euphoric experience on its own.
Using a ferry is a great way to see the harbour, and is also a vital link to the north shore communities from the city as there is no rail connection to the Northern beaches. Circular Quay at the north end of the city next to the Opera House is the main ferry port, operated by Sydney Ferries. The company have a website at www.sydneyferries.info/ where you can find network maps, timetables and a fare calculator.
Sydney Ferries connects Circular Quay and the city to the north shore communities of Manly and Mosman, Neutral Bay and Taronga Zoo, across to Milsons Point where you can access Luna Park, and also to Darling Harbour and Balmain. The Ferries also travel up the Parramatta River as far as Parramatta itself, some distance inland.
Sydney is a city of great variety, with beaches, mountains and national parks, fantastic restaurants and attractions. The Harbour is at the heart of the city and the view from a ferry is a fine way to see the city from the water. The contrast of a high rise city scape, the majestic beauty of the harbour, with the imposing harbour bridge and unique Opera House is seen from a new perspective from on the water. You will feel a new appreciation of the size of the harbour traversing it by water.
The North shore harbour side communities have many inland beaches that are not tidal and are very suitable for children. There is also a Manly Jet Cat ferry which is a faster service. Darling Harbour has a range of attractions including restaurants and museums. Ferries are at the heart of Sydney and we highly recommend using them.
