The Sydney Aquarium is located on the eastern side of Darling Harbour and displays more than 650 species of Australian marine life in a unique setting. More than 6,000 marine creatures can be viewed in a unique environment. There are many displays and also a glass walk-through tunnel.
The glass tunnel at the Sydney Aquarium allows you to walk and watch sharks swimming above your head or under your feet. In 2008 a new crocodile exhibit is available to view Saltwater Crocodiles which grow up to 7m / 23ft.
The Sydney Aqaurium opened in 1988 and is is one of the largest aquariums in the world. It also has the world’s biggest collection of Great Barrier Reef marine life.
While you won’t be able to view a Great White shark, you can see a sample of the 180 native Australian shark species that includes 10 dangerous sharks. Some of the sharks at display are over 3m(10ft) long and can weigh up to 300kg(660lbs).
You will find displays of Moray eels with long razor-sharp teeth. Did you know that the Platypus could be deadly to small animals? On the inside rear legs of the male platypus there is a spur with enough poison to kill small animals.
The Stingray Dasyatis Brevicandata is a gracious swimmer and a sure favourite with children. It is also the largest in the world and can grow to more than 4.3m.
The aquarium is divided into several sections such as the Southern Rivers section, the Northern Rivers and the Northern Ocean / Great Barrier Reef. The Southern Ocean section has a collection of friendlier creatures such as seals and penguins. The Sydney Harbour forms part of the Southern Ocean display and gives an insight into the animals living under the Harbour Bridge.
There are a few tours available such as feeding the animals.
